Dementia treatment using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
We must start by stating that these are small studies and we make no claims as to how our HBOT can treat or assist with your condition, please do read the links to the studies cited below, to form your own opinion.
We have found studies which demonstrate that HBOT can assist with the improvement of cognitive function in patients with cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease (1) as well as vascular dementia (4).
Therapeutics like hyperbaric oxygen treatment, which improves tissue oxygen supply and reduces low oxygen level conditions in the brain, may be an alternative therapy for Alzheimer’s disease and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) (1).
HBOT has also been shown to improve attention, information processing speed, and executive functions in older adults without a dementia diagnosis (3) A 12-week trial involving 158 patients with vascular dementia, all treated with donepezil 5 mg daily, reported that those with additional HBOT intervention had not only a significant improvement in cognition over the group treated with donepezil only, but this was accompanied by an increase in blood humanin (a peptide linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and disease) (4)
We hope that these studies give you an idea of what HBOT may be able to do for you or a loved one dealing with Dementia, we do not give any guarantees, but the studies do look promising.
