Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

We must start by stating that these are small studies and we make no claims as to how our HBOT can treat or assist with your condition, but provide studies which point to how it may help some individuals. please do read the links to the studies cited below, to form your own opinion.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is also referred to as: High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (HDOT) Hyperbaric Oxygenation Treatment and to a lesser extent, High Density Oxygen Therapy.

Breathing 100% oxygen under pressure (in a barochamber – which is like a small room) for one hour, to increase the oxygen in the tissues and cells of the body. It’s important to understand that, on an everyday basis, we are only breathing about 21% oxygen.

The benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for CFS may include:

Reduction of pain
Strengthening the immune system
Combatting brain fog and tiredness
Reduction of inflammation
Reduction of fatigue

Chronic diseases, such as CFS and ME, have an element of inflammation to them, and because HBOT can reduce inflammation significantly, this is one way in which HBOT may aid CFS. It is also believed that HBOT strengthens the immune system, which is another way in which it may help CFS.

PubMed Article on CFS and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: The efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study provided 15 treatments over 3 weeks and found that participants showed significant improvements in their Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Fatigue Quality of Life Score (FQLS). The treatment was well tolerated with no complications.

Recent Research (2025 Update): Another study, involving a control group of 30 healthy participants and 30 people with CFS, examined the effects of 40 HBOT sessions. The study concluded:

“ME/CFS patients before treatment show increased thalamic FC with motor, somatosensory, and visual regions, possibly indicating altered sensory and motor processing. There was a trend of ‘normalization’ of these alterations after HBOT treatment. The absence of volumetric changes suggests ME/CFS symptoms may be more closely related to functional network changes rather than structural ones. Functional alterations must be put in relation to ME/CFS symptomatology.”

We have several long-term members with CFS who report that the therapy provides greater mental clarity, reduced fatigue, and better sleep.
